What is Hit.Movie, and why?

THEATRE IN A BOX.

Hit.Movie compresses everything needed to screen a movie into a standard Apple TV Box. It does this without compromising the security and delivery specifications of current digital cinema.

How do we do this?

First, a primer on how current digital cinema distribution and exhibition works.

  1. Once a movie is fully wrapped up (post production is complete) the encrypted movie is loaded onto hard disks (or in some cases, delivered via the internet) to movie theatres.

  2. On the day of movie release, come screening time, the hard disk is plugged into a computer which is connected to a projector.

  3. A secret key is delivered via the internet which is used to decrypt the contents of the hard disk. The secret key can be configurable to be used one or more times and within a certain time duration.

  4. The decrypted sound and images (i.e. the movie) are finally projected on to the large screen. Unknown to your naked eye, the movie carries an invisible watermark. This is used to trace the origin of piracy.

  5. The equipment used to make all this work is specialised for the movie industry and is not something you can pick off a shelf (or order on Amazon). It costs a bomb. The super expensive popcorn you eat in movie theatres is a way for theatres to recoup this cost.

  6. That's just about it. We've simplified things a lot here. As usual, the devil is in the details. You can read more about digital cinema specs here and here.

To distill everything, there are three things of importance here.

  1. Encrypted Content.

  2. Decryption Keys.

  3. Forensic Watermarking.

'Hit Movie - Theatre in a Box' accomplishes all three and a bit more. Read on about 'Content Security' in the next section.
